Welcome to my blog. As a psychotherapeutic counsellor based in the UK, I aim to provide clear and practical insights into understanding and managing anxiety.
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a natural response to stress or potential danger. It’s an alert system designed to keep us safe. However, when this system becomes overactive, it can lead to feelings of unease and distress, impacting daily life.
Signs and Symptoms of Anxiety
Anxiety presents differently for everyone, but common symptoms include:
- Physical: Increased heart rate, sweating, trembling, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
- Emotional: Persistent worry, irritability, and a sense of impending doom.
- Behavioral: Avoidance of certain situations, difficulty concentrating, and restlessness. Feeling confused about the need for connection with others, but not wanting to socialise.
Causes of Anxiety
Anxiety can be triggered by various factors, including stress, major life changes, trauma, or genetic predisposition. Identifying the root cause of your anxiety is crucial for effective management.
Managing Anxiety
- Grounding – using your five senses to notice what is immediately around you.
- Breathing Exercises: Deep, controlled breathing can help calm your nervous system.
- Physical Activity: Regular exercise can reduce stress and improve overall mood and bring you back into connection with your body.
- Meditation: This practice can help you stay present and reduce excessive worry.
- Healthy Lifestyle: Ensuring adequate sleep, a balanced diet, and limiting caffeine intake can positively impact anxiety levels.
- Talking About It: Sharing your feelings with trusted individuals or a counsellor can provide relief and clarity.
When to Seek Professional Help
There are times when self-help strategies may not suffice. Seeking professional assistance is a constructive step towards managing anxiety. As a psychotherapeutic counsellor, I offer a confidential space to explore your feelings and develop personalised coping strategies.
